Urban Tiger

Tiger, tiger burning bright Face alight , he strides at night Arms swinging , probing eyes Long steps, deceptively light He reaches the house He  looks around All is still Sweet slumber reigns Behind the door, eyes aglow A racing heart, uncurbed spirit She waits for the wild With unconcealed delight. The clink of a latch Muted with care The gate swings open He strides in Up the steps  Across the porch A fleeting shadow  So quick art thee She holds her breath Bites down on her lip As he glides in  With the swiftness of wind The doe stands across Entrapped ; enchanted He opens his arms  To fold her in She runs to him  Naively unaware Of the danger that lay  Just a snarl away.

Sweet Solitude

I heard the drumming on the rooftop Of the heady fingers, perfect in rhythm Diving into bed, eyes already shut Snuggled under the sheet to better enjoy the rain Dishes in the sink undone Clothes piled unfolded The newspaper lying on the floor Open at page number eleven I look at them languidly No hurry here, my  mate None around to roll eyes at me I can do my chores later In sweet solitude I am my own master I go easy on myself Taking my own sweet time No visits, no guests And definitely no getting together I celebrate my  existence Peacefully all by myself , my dear.

Heartfelt

I went searching one day To the realm of my heart To seek out the chambers Where memories lay Twilight lay enticingly on the way  A twinkle marked the entrance ahey I stepped into the first chamber, sombre and grey The ventilator clouded, letting in barely a ray Holding my breath, curiously aware Of the slightest changes in the lair  I moved my eyes slowly, taking care To catch every sway of the heavy air  Seeing a wraith of my yester years One I had wronged? Or was I the  wronged one then? So went wisdom of after thought. The lies, the deceit The painful heartbreaks The guilt, the remorse The tear filled goodbyes All human follies Laid bare to the bone Bittersweet; yet all mine own Lay strewn around; forlorn I looked at them carefully Waiting to fend a stab of pain A minute , then two, and feeling fine I walked out not caring to linger long Making sure to keep open the door  Let in the air, cool and fresh Let there be light Let in the warmth Walking out with a ...

Face to Face

I delude myself In many little ways I smile When people mouth inanities I nod Even when I disagree To argue is exhausting He  will not He sticks to his values And retorts hotly He will not smile If he be offended He glares at my follies And shakes his head in disgust My mask slips a little When worn too long I then grow silent Giving myself time I don it again and smile He looks at me with knowing eyes A trace of disbelief arching his brows I look at him and smile cheerfully My face carefully made Who is wiser He or I?

Time

Keep a light In sight Not too far To bring back the sparkle Look forward to something And happily plan Your days will pass In glad thoughts And not drearily drag Make everyday special Time is relative Don't let it slip past Hold it fast!

Laughter

I laugh at inappropriate times Much to my mortification I laugh, a weak laughter When I truely mean to cry At times, in great anger When I attempt to snarl I break out into giggles Much to my opponents indignation I laugh in confusion I laugh in genuine fear Yet when I hear some jokes My laugh seem to need some coaxing How I do not know But at some happy times When my heart laughs in joy My eyes just tear up My laughter has a mind of his own He does not listen to me He wells up unbidden I capitulate in resignation !

Peace

The light flickers I stop mid step Breath held I look around Keenly searching For a sign I sense none No lingering presence He is gone The air light I feel the calm He suffers no more I cried For a life destroyed For the potential lost I prayed May he be happy Wherever he be I look ahead Eyes tired Soul wiser I seek peace For him And for me

Emotional Turbulance

A stinging behind my eyes The unshed tears  I will not shed them For I'm  well over the pain I often stand apart And watch my emotions  broil Wondering  at times Why my eyes still  feel the strain Who should I  trust My eyes or my heart Do my eyes reflect my heart Or independently cry I thought I was well over The  angst and the hurt But it creeps on me  unawares At moments, weak ,unguarded At a touch of genuine solicitude From another unbidden At a look of true concern that says What happened to you, my dear I look upon these feelings  The metacognition empowering I am my own lab rat I search for meaning within Telling myself I am strong  I pull  up my spine  Push back my shoulders  And hold my head high

Mixed Feelings

Can you  love another so much So much that it hurts to say And then you just block him And act  with disdain  You think it is wrong  You feel defiled So you bury deep  This feeling of love  From the corner of your eyes  You keep him in sight  Yet avert in hate If he chances by Delude yourself  As long as you  can The day will soon come  When you face the demons  in your heart  Can you really sort The right from the wrong  It is all in your heart  You are the best  judge!

Metamorphosis

I have changed I know I have  changed When I look at the world And don't try to hide My eyes have  grown  bolder The spark in them stronger My steps have a bounce Heart is singing I was not thus A few days thence But now I have learnt The right  way to live I know where  am going I know what I can do The caterpillar  has morphed Into a beautiful  butterfly  blue!

My World

When I walk to the end of my driveway And stand looking  at the open fields At dusk, after  the sun has gone down The fresh cool breeze caresses my cheeks I think to myself, there can be no heaven better  than this Oh, sweet God,  I cannot thank you enough! When I come home after a long weekend  And look at my plants to see They have all grown an inch taller with tender green leaves I touch them in wonder and think to myself There can be no surprise  better than this God, you created this  for me! A smile from my mother  A word from my father Sisters standing  always near No woe could touch me then I look back on my childhood and think God, what blessed life you have given me! I hold my baby close to my heart And he sleeps secure in my arms  With a smile on his lips I look adoringly at him and think There can be no fulfillment  better than this God, my heart swells with love ! My student puts his little...

Mettle

There is a place  Deep in my heart Where I keep things hidden  Away from my eyes Foolish things done long ago Wrapped in a foil of  youthfulness Life's choices wrongly made Covered in blissful  ignorance  Some images indelibly  etched That surfaces at certain times I may not be proud of them But they made what I am I keep another place to counter it The happy, peaceful and good times Carved lovingly in my mind's eye The shutter quick to capture it A day from school  When my teacher  praised My grandfather gruff  Showing his grace A random fleeting scene Of two ladies sitting at a kerb Knitting and chatting in the winter sun  Oblivious to the morning  rush Of  love and fortitude unblemished  That forever my heart regales I polish them to brilliance  To bring out when my morale fails.

Amma

I looked at my mother long and deep  She broke into peals of laughter  And asked, who are you  Amma, look at me,I am your  daughter  She smiled  at me happily  Then giggled, with one hand over her mouth  Saree askew, hair ruffled She joins her hands and prays with fervour Amma, where are you  I silently asked You were the pillar of our house; our multihanded  goddess You fled away leaving us this giggling happy  child Did we prove too much for you Are you  okay, wherever you are  Do you  think of us sometimes  Come back for a while and look at us We miss you now so very much!

Interlude

With a rush of adrenaline Quickening my pace I briskly walked Through the sun dappled ways The city lay Like an unknown maze Roads alluring; unexplored Mystic; teeming streets I stood at the crossroads Alone; eyes a-twinkle The day stretching ahead Promising adventures and thrill Ignoring the stares Of the loitering few A newcomer in the city Sticking out in the milieu I walked with a swagger Recklessly buoyant Footloose and fancy free In the unknown land Unknown streets Unseen faces Even the little shrubbery Seeming exotic;diverse I peeped into shops Enjoying the sight Of wares enchanting Smells cloyingly sweet The mid-day sun Beating on my face I soon got tired And turned to go home Ahead loomed the metro I darted up the steps At the ticket counter Checked for the place Was it Jubilee Hills? I thought it was so Took the ticket Proceeded to the gate Reaching the station I looked around Hoping I was right Yet not really vexed I ca...

Choices

The child looked around  A little girl of four Cute pigtails   Chubby face troubled She was in school It was mothers day All her friend's  mothers arrived Hers was not there She looked among the audience  Trying  to locate That much loved face But it was not there The performance  started  She sang with gusto It was Mother's  day She was singing for her mother  But where was her mother  Why didn't she  come Was she all right A tiny little  pang The child looked worried At the end of the song The crease betwixt her brows Deepening  further  The program over They went back to class The mothers went home Classes resumed  Some children were crying  They wanted to go home Seeing  their mothers leave They  could not stop their tears  But she sat quietly  Looking  lost She wanted to see her mother  She was scared now The bell rang fina...

Blaze on

I was told when I was a child  Girls are to be seen and not heard Girls are to be timid Don't laugh out loud  its not really lady like  I was a strong  girl  Tall and strapping  Taller than others my age I felt so ashamed A clumsy long limbed clout I envied the small thin figures They looked so very delicate In my size seven shoes I loomed above most They had to look up at me The Mills and Boon books I read Raved about the dainty damsels The dark and handsome  young man Was so enamoured  by her smallness Her coyness and her helplessness  I could  never be small Tall as I was  And with strong  broad shoulders I looked athletic and fit I so hated my strength  I tried to be what they wanted Soft spoken and shy Because I wanted it so bad I really became just so Gentle and shy, seen and not heard I underplayed my strength I buried my exuberant nature deep Put on a face of calm serenity An...
